'Fallout 76' Leveling Guide (2024)

Fallout 76 's leveling system is totally different from other Fallout games, so that means age-old XP farming methods no longer work. In this guide, we'll outline eight ways to gain XP fast in Appalachia.

1) Claim Workshops : There are several public Workshops on the map, and claiming them offers large amounts of base XP with additional opportunities for XP once you take hold of it. A decent early-game example of this is the Converted Munitions Factory, which isn't all that far from Vault 76. You can learn more about the location in our Fusion Core locations guide.

Taking the Workshop should offer a free level or two, but then you'll have the option to gain even more XP as you defend it from waves of Scorched or Super mutants that show up from time to time. All Workshops also specialize in a specific resource as well. You'll need good ammo to take down high-level enemies later on, and the Converted Munitions Factory is probably the best place to find it.

2) Early-Game Quests: Quests don't offer that much XP once you reach the mid and high ranges of the level cap, but they're still an easy way for beginners to get started. The opening parts of the Overseer's Quest are super-easy, and they'll put you on a path toward unlocking better weapons and perks. Those gains slow fairly quickly, but they're still worth mentioning.

3) Kill Stuff: As it stands right now, the level system of Fallout 76 revolves almost entirely around a kill-first model. In the most basic sense, the more enemies you kill, the more XP you get.

But there's a decent amount of nuance to how that XP is doled out. For example, certain enemy types yield greater gains. Scorched are numerous and easy to kill, but they don't offer much XP. Instead, focus on stuff like Super mutants, Mole Men or Robobrains. As long as you've got good ammo, seek out foes about 10 levels higher than you. It also helps to look at the enemy's rank as well. For example, Skirmishers and Enforcer Super mutants offer more XP per kill than the standard ones.

If you're kill farming, solid spots to check include the mutant camp at WV Lumber Co., Mole Men in Big Excavator and Robobrains in Dyre Chemical. These spots refresh every handful of minutes or by leaving the server and joining a new one.

4) Don't Worry About Dying: In Fallout 76, there's almost no penalty for dying. That being said, as you go on your killing spree, don't be afraid to take risks. The level difference may seem scary, but it's often something you can overcome with skillful play. Passive calls won't give you XP.

5) Play With Teams: Certain Charisma perks, like Inspirational, offer percentage XP boosts as long as you play on a team. That doesn't mean you need to roam the wasteland together all the time, only that it helps to ask a friend or rando to be on a team while you stay on the server. This allows you to earn XP exponentially faster than you would have otherwise.

6) Sleep: When you sleep in a Sleeping Bag or Bed, you'll get a Well-Rested XP Bonus of at least five percent, with even more offered for Beds. Rest frequently for these gains to stack on top of any perk-related buffs, and you'll truly be leveling up fast.

7) Consume The Right Food: Specific consumables also offer timed XP boosts, and they're found fairly often in the open world. Be on the lookout for Canned Meat Stew, Cranberry Cobbler, Cranberry Relish, Squirrel Stew and Cranberry Juice. Use these foods strategically as you fight high-XP enemies during a Well-Rested Bonus period.

8) Walk to Named Locations: As you walk between the various XP farm spots that work for you, stop at marked locations along the way. Each discovery only offers a tiny amount of XP, but those points add up and they're easy to get.

That should help you start leveling up fast in Fallout 76. Once you pass level 15, the systems really start to open up to facilitate the perk, gear and weapon experimnetation the Fallout franchise is known for.

Fallout 76 is available now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
