Murungakkai Oorpu recipe with step by step pictures. This Oorpu belongs to the South Arcot Reddy Cuisine.

This is mostly prepared for lunch to serve along with rice in the place of regular sambar.

This Murungakkai Oorpu though a dal based dish, does not have tamarind and the cooking method makes it different from that of the regular south indian murungakkai sambar.

You can check out this Peerkangai Oorpu which is a similar dish but the ingredients and the method vary making it much different.

Anything with drumstick is a hot favorite in our home. Drumsticks are rich source of Iron and good for you if you are an anaemic.

1. Pressure cook tur dal for 4-5 whistles till it is soft. Do not mash. Keep aside.

2. Place the drumstick pieces along with a cup of water in a bowl. Add turmeric powder and 2 pinch salt.

3. Cook covered over medium flame for 3-4 mins or till the drumstick is fully cooked and soft. Keep aside.

4. Heat a pan with oil. Add Vengaya kari vadagam, urad dal and cook for few seconds.

Add onions, curry leaves, green chilies and saute till the onions turn translucent.

5. Add 1 cup water, sambar powder and cook for 2 mins over low flame till the raw smell disappears.

6. Add the cooked drumstick along with the water, add salt and cook covered for another 2 - 3 mins over low flame.

7. Add the cooked tur dal, mix well. Add ¼ cup or more water, if the oorpu appears to be too thick.

Cook for 3-4 mins over low flame for the Murungakkai Oorpu to come together. It should be neither watery nor too thick.

8.Switch off stove and keep the pan closed for 2 mins before transferring to a serving bowl.Serve hot with rice and a dry curry of your choice.

Ingredients

  • Tur Dal - ½ cup
  • Drumstick - 1
  • Onion - 1 medium
  • Green Chili - 2
  • Sambar powder - 3 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Vengaya Kari Vadagam - 1 tsp
  • Urad dal - ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Salt - to taste

Instructions

Preparation:

  • Chop drumstick into 2 - 3 inch pieces.

  • Chop onions finely. Cut the green chilies into 2 or 3 pieces.

  • Wash tur dal well.

How to cook Murungakkai Oorpu:

  • Pressure cook tur dal in enough water for 4 - 5 whistles till it is soft to the touch. You should be able to mash it when pressed between your fingers.

  • Keep the cooked dal aside and do not mash with a masher. We will be using it as such.

  • Place the drumstick pieces along with a cup of water in a bowl.

  • Add turmeric powder, 2 pinch salt and cook covered over medium flame for 3-4 mins or till the drumstick is fully cooked and soft. Keep aside.

  • Heat a pan with oil. Add Vengaya kari vadagam, urad dal and cook for few seconds.

      This is different from the regular sambar as its more thicker, there is no tamarind and the seasonings also change.
