Autistic Friendship Affirmations šŸ„³In the toolkit, we dig into some strategies and approaches for seeking out new or deepening existing friendships, and before doing so, we feel it is important to offer some affirmations that remind us we are all unique in our needs, goals, and preferences. We live in a world that is often dictated by Allistic social norms, and it can be all too easy to think that we have to learn a specific pattern of socializing or pursue friendships in a specific way if we want something that is "valid" or long-lasting.It is okay to center our needs and goals when it comes to our own friendships, particularly in those times when the road feels particularly challenging:I can define what friendship means to me.I can communicate to an extent that feels comfortable to me.Every friendship is a little different.I can advocate for myself.šŸ”— Check out the rest of the toolkit here: https://lnkd.in/eyymdn3w

Friendships are a vital part of our overall well-being. However, as we grow up, the only relationships that seem to take space are partners, parents, children and colleagues. A big reason for loneliness is not having authentic and deep connections. Our workshop is to emphasize how indispensable friendships are, even -and especially- in adulthood. Like any other relationship, friendships have their ups and downs and require as much intentionality and value to thrive. Authentic friendships are a source of unconditional comfort, support, and joy for us. So come join us in discussing how to honor friendships, as we navigate being human. Let us learn to be present in these significant connections!#adultfriendships #friendsmakelifebetter #valueoffriendships #meaningfulconnections #effortandintentionality #friendshipworkshop

According to African tradition, twenty friends can not be friends for twenty years. And you know what, I believe this narrative, because one person can not be the same for twenty years. We evolve differently and separately. We have our own experiences, we grow, we learn, unlearn, and relearn. You know what, friendship is one deal breaker because everything evolves from it. Trust me, the fact that a new environment will always breed the need for new companionship is something we can not run away from. We all need someone to laugh with, eat with, argue with, and even run away with. Nobody wants to be alone, and we should work our way through this, one way or the other. However, we must learn that for friendships to strive, certain things must be put in place, understood, and discussed. One of which is setting good boundaries. It is rather unfortunate that certain people perceive good boundaries as selfishness. While there's selfishness on one part, our friends must come to terms with certain limitations we can attribute to. This is not an advocacy for intolerance, but whatever friend refuses to come to terms with whatever you can absorb or reject should never be worth the risk. Never forget to love your friends the way you love yourself and not more or less than yourself.Communication is another fuel to burn the fire of a good friendship because there is never one way to the market. Trust me, our differences are the secret ingredients to the stew of every friendship. But for this stew to be well seasoned, realizing that no one will ever see life from the same angle as yours is very important. Talking about our differences, the reason we see things the way we do, and coming to a mutual understanding with our friends will go a long way in actualizing beautiful friendships. We must also learn to embrace our friends' wins. It is never easy, trust me. The spark of jealousy always surfaces, especially with people we've come from scratch with only to appear more established than us. Just like the Bible says that we should rejoice with those who do, I encourage you to celebrate your friends first because our time of celebrations is already around the corner. To catch more tips on friendships, I'll be hosting an Instagram Live Session on the 8th of September, 2023, titled, Navigating womanhood and friendships. Trust me, because this is something you wouldn't want to miss. See you there. Adios.

I have some exciting news about my book, WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS, published in the U.S. and Canada by Simon & Schuster and translated into 29 languages. There is now a Second edition with a new Preface, updated Bibliography, Resource section, and cartoons at the beginning of each chapter.I'm including the link to the companion WORKBOOK to WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS. It could be used along with WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS or as a STANDALONE workbook.https://lnkd.in/ggArSWM9It's called Putting WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS to Work: Exercises and Activities to Deal with Friends Who betray, Abandon, or Wound Yu, Plus Help in Finding and Keeping Good Friends. It's oversized at 7x10 to keep the cost down since it's in 4 color with photographs throughout so the workbook is as upbeat and engaging to read and compete as possible! The workbook is a labor of love based on decades of original research into friendship dating back to my Atheneum book, SINGLE IN AMERICA (1980), followed by my sociology dissertation on friendship (CUNY Graduate Center, 1983). I've published several books on friendship including FRIENDSHIFTS (1997, 2nd edition, 1999( which landed me interviews on OPRAH, THE VIEW, TODAY SHOW, CBS SUNDAY MORNING, and then Simon & Schuster asked me to write WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS. It's been CONINTUALLY in print since it was first published in 2002 and I'm so excited that the Second edition is now available! The workbook will hopefully be a useful tool for anyone dealing with a fading or problematical (or toxic) friendship. The last part of the workbook has activities, exercises, and text that offer help finding new positive friends or becoming a better friend to the friends a reader already has.The workbook could be done by a reader on your own or friendship coaches, therapists, or social workers might find it a useful tool for their clients who are dealing with friendship issues. Thanks for your interest in Putting WHEN FREINDSHIPO HURTS to Work as well as the Second edition of WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS.

We often underestimate the heartbreak of a friendship ending. I had a close friend for 11 years, a confidante in this scary world. It ended abruptly and with not much said, but a lot felt. The loneliness of not being able to pick up the phone to hear them, to talk, to share, became overwhelming that I compartmentalised it for a long time. Slowly working through it made me realise the many things I overlooked, the things I miss, and where things could have possibly gone better. I learned a lot from that friendship but it did leave me not trusting others but mostly not trusting myself. Working on self trust brought back my confidence, self-esteem, and also feeling safe to stand up for myself. It had been a process but I look back now knowing my boundaries, values, and needs are clearer and firmer than before. When relationships and friendships end and we feel that loss, our sense of safety, self-worth, and trust all become questioned and distorted. Working on my foundation of these has helped me acquire new friendships, healthier friendships, closer friendships, that are being built on trust, understanding, and hold greater value now. I am grateful for the lessons as they bring me closer to understanding myself šŸ’—P.S - I am running a 3 day program on how to build healthy relationships after trauma. In the month of July, we discussed intently the fact that no two marital relationships are the same because commitment means different things to different people based on an individualā€™s personality, family background, exposure, experience, love need, and maturity. Aside from the aforementioned factors, there are certain factors that can naturally impede commitment in a marital relationship. These factors include, but are not limited to, the following:āœ“Unrealistic expectationāœ“Constant criticism/condemnationāœ“Lack of contentmentāœ“Communication gap or breakdownāœ“Solo syndromeāœ“Emotional cheatingāœ“InfidelityPlease visit our website, shcounselingclinic.org.ng for Julyā€™s teachings. Please review Sure Hope through this link: https://lnkd.in/dWv_Gh2a. I wanted to share a little bit about my journey in building bridges through the power of friendship, forgiveness, adjusting, letting go, and not being stubborn.Friendship: Genuine friendships are bridges that connect hearts and souls. They provide astrong foundation upon which we can build bridges to understanding and empathy. One doesn't need a huge line up of friends...Because that's a mob. Just a FEW...meaningful are sufficient.Forgiveness: Letting go of grudges and resentment by ONE person helps the health of 2 ! So carring resentment for another lifetime is way too juvenile. Adjusting: No two people are exactly alike, and that's what makes people and associations beautiful. Learning to adjust and accommodate each other's quirks and differences is like adding extrasupport beams to our friendship bridge.Letting Go: There were moments when I held onto things that didn't serve me well ā€“ pastgrievances, unrealistic expectations, or even toxic relationships. Not Being Stubborn: Stubbornness can be a barrier to building bridges. It's essential to beopen to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences. By being flexible and willing to adapt, I foundthat I could connect with people on a deeper level.Building bridges is not just about connectingwith others; it's also about connecting with yourself. It's about becoming a better, morecompassionate, and understanding person. What about your bridge-building journey? What did you give up to give in ? #BuildingBridges #Friendship #Forgiveness #LettingGo
